You want healthy hair. Who doesn’t? Shiny, beautiful tresses are the thing we’re all striving for. What can you do to get them? You might be surprised at some of the answers.

Eat right. Yes, what you eat definitely has an effect on your hair. Eat walnuts, salmon, and sprinkle flax seeds on your cereal in the mornings. Don’t like any of those things? Omega 3 Supplements will keep your hair healthy, strong, and shiny.

Make sure you get plenty of lean protein in your diet, as well. The recommended amount of protein per day for women 30-50 is about 50 grams per day. That’s the equivalent of two eggs for breakfast, a 3 oz hamburger for lunch, and a chicken breast for dinner.

If you color your hair, don’t over do it. Don’t color more than once a month, or you run the risk of damaging your hair. You’ve stripped the outer layer off your hair when you bleach it; doing it too often strips more, and leaves it vulnerable.

Use shampoo for colored hair and conditioner for colored hair, as well. These hydrate and protect your hair, and keep damage at a minimum.

Use natural boar bristle brushes to brush out your hair. The natural bristles distribute oil more easily through your hair, leaving it more hydrated and less prone to breakage.

Deep condition your hair. If you use heat styling, you should use a deep conditioner once a week, at the very least. If you have very damaged hair, you should do it twice.

Unless you have oily hair, don’t shampoo every day. Try to shampoo every other day. On the days you don’t shampoo, rinse and use conditioner on the ends.

Using a shampoo for thick hair can weigh down fine hair and make it limp. Make sure you’re using the correct products for your hair texture. If you have fine hair, you want a volumizing conditioner and shampoo. This could be disastrous if your hair is already thick.

Do it when you have plenty of time, and you’ll find the right products for you hair in the privacy of your own home. Shiny, healthy hair is the best style for your hair. It makes you look younger and is always something you should strive for. Shiny hair is sexy. No matter what kind of cut or style you wear, it’s enhanced by healthy, shiny hair.

Here are a few tips that can help improve your shine:

Avoid drying out your hair. Over-coloring or over-shampooing can do this. Color your hair no more than every 5 to 6 weeks – I’m not talking about touch-ups, though those can be damaging as well if done too quickly. Shampoo daily only if you must. If your hair isn’t oily, try going a day without shampooing and see if it still styles and looks good.

If you must heat style, make sure to use thermal protectant shampoo or thermal protectant hair products. This keeps your hair from being damaged, and ramps up your shine.

When you do wash your hair, make your last rinse (when you rinse out your conditioner) cool water. This seals the hair cuticle and will also make your hair smoother. The smoother the hair cuticle, the higher the amount of shine you’ll get. Try this, it really works!

If you blow dry, finish with a blast of cool air, which also seals the hair’s cuticle and raises shine.

Try a shine serum for extra sheen. A lot of shine serums double as anti-frizz serums, so you get a two-in-one. If you need shine serum for fine hair, make sure to use a spray that doesn’t weigh your hair down. You can also try a finishing spray. These do double duty; they hold your style and make your hair shiny and healthy-looking at the same time.

So, have you been doing it the right way? I haven’t. I usually just plaster the conditioner on and rinse it out right away. I’m going to try it this way, and see what happens.

Looking in my bathroom vanity, I realized that I have tons of hair products. Everything from anti-frizz solution to shine serum is in there. I got to wondering – is everyone as confused as I am about hair products? In this article, Part 2 of Explaining Different Hair Products, I’m going to examine a few more hair products and tell you what they’re really intended to do. I found out that I’m actually using some of my products wrong. (Read Explaining Different Hair Products, Part 1 here.)

• Pomades are thick and give you mega hold. They are great for creating a slicked-back style. It also gives you a shine that I find quite attractive. Be aware, though, that unless your pomade is water based, it can be difficult to wash out.

• Root lifter gives you support at the hair root. Want a little volume up top? Does your hair lie too flat at the root and hug your head? Spray these in or spot apply just at the root level. You’ll get a great lift for your hairstyle.

• Hair glue is precisely what it sounds like. You ‘glue’ your hair together and spike it up. They dry hard and stay in place. If you use them too often, you can damage your hair.

• Anti-Frizz hair products coat the hair shaft and make it lay flat. Instead of curling or waving, the coated hair straightens and is smoothed out.

• Shine serums sometimes also say they are an anti-frizz serum. These are usually silicone-based and reduce frizz and flyaways. If you have oily hair, use them sparingly. You don’t want your hair to start looking greasy, you just want it to shine. I was using too much shine serum and making my hair look oily so I cut down the amount. My hair looks much better now. I still get the shine without the extra oiliness.

You’re going to the beach, or you’re going to be poolside. You know you’re going to be in the water and the sun all day, and you don’t want to fuss with your hair. You’d like to look a little chic, as well. What can you do?

Here are some fun and easy beach and poolside hairstyles. Little fuss is involved, but you’re going to look great. There are a couple of things you need to do first to protect your hair from the hot rays of the sun. You don’t want breakage or hair damage, and you sure don’t want to burn your scalp.

1. Make sure you bring along a hat. A sunburned scalp is no joke, and the skin on your head is tender and easy to burn.

2. Moisturize your hair with a good leave in conditioner with sunscreen or UV protection before you go. Your hair won’t dry out from the long day in the sun, and there will be no damage from UV rays.

3. Don’t forget an elastic band or headband and use it to keep your hair out of your face.

Now that’s settled, on to the hairstyles.

Go natural. Leave your hair in its natural state, no matter the texture. Pull any long pieces back and secure with a headband or elastic band.

Braid or twist the sides. Either pull the braids back or leave them to fall around your face. Both look great and keep the majority of your hair out of your face.

Pull half your hair back. Take the top layer and pull back into a loose ponytail, leaving some ends loose to frame your face. Not too many loose ends, though. Otherwise, it will annoy you by slapping you in the face when you get wet.

Put your hair in a loose ponytail. There’s nothing sexier than a slightly messy do.

A high ponytail looks great. Pair it with a baseball hat for a sporty, sexy do.

The side pony. Pull your hair to one side and secure loosely at the nape of the neck.
