If there’s a holiday or an occasion coming up that you need to buy a gift for, how about some green ideas? From gift giving to wrapping paper, there are lots of ways to make it green. You can even have a green party or get-together … and that is much more fun than it sounds. In fact, unless you tell them, no-one will even realize that you are being environmentally conscious.

Ditch the invitations. Save paper and either invite by email or over the telephone, or in person, of course. You can have a fun evening out by going from place to place inviting your friends to your upcoming party. If they live close and the weather is pretty, walk from house to house. Make it a pre-party. I’ve done this before, and it was just as much fun as the actual party.

Make your own wrapping paper. Most wrapping paper is not recyclable and instead ends up in a landfill somewhere. You can get creative with this, and everyone will be touched that you went to so much trouble. Start with recycled paper and use stencils, glue on pictures cut from old magazines, add recycled ribbons or make your own from old cloth. Paint it with watercolors if you desire; you can use practically anything to decorate your wrapping paper and make it pretty. Or you can wrap with newspaper – the comics section always looks great. Alternatively, give your gift in an attractive basket. It gives a wonderful presentation and becomes part of the gift.

Serve local produce at your dinner. It actually tastes better than produce that is shipped from other parts of the country. They’ll rave about your food, and you’ll be doing your part to save the Earth, as well.

It’s National Teacher’s Day! Celebrate the special teacher in your life today, and show them appreciation. Students can show appreciation for their teachers with small gifts – or good behavior. The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day as “a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives”.

Teachers make a difference; they show up to work every day and make sure that their students have the skills and education they need. It’s often a thankless job; the pay is low, and the stress is high. They deserve a day of their own, and I for one am glad that they have it. I think I’d be a much different person – a lesser one – without the quality teachers I have been privileged to know. They often pay for supplies out of their own pockets, and the good ones go the extra mile to make sure that their students have what they need in their classrooms.

I’ve had so many wonderful teachers in my life, and it’s hard to pick out just one who made a difference. My first grade teacher inspired a lifelong love of reading and curiosity in me, and I thank her forever for that. There’s my fifth grade teacher, who bought school pictures for my family and gave them to us as a gift when my father was laid off work. There was my high school English teacher, who encouraged and inspired me to choose a career path that fulfilled me instead of one that I was expected to take. Or how about my college art teacher, who told me I had a great ‘eye’ and predicted that one day my home would be full of great art, some of it created by me. It’s hard to pick just one and I don’t know that I can (or would even want to), so I’m appreciating all teachers today instead, and realizing that without them, I would not be where I am today.

1•   Do It Yourself Greeting Cards:  Take a page from the Kindergarten crowd, bypass the store and make your own card on recycled paper.  A little elbow grease, some careful thought and recycled pictures can go a long way toward saying you care.  For an easy idea, use photos from an old magazine to illustrate the card and scan of copy a color photo of the recipient to create a tailor-made greeting.

2•   You’ve Got Mail: Speaking of Kindergarten, why not go back in time and make a Valentine’s Day mailbox to deliver your card.  Find an old shoebox, line it with recycled paper, cut a slot in the top and decorate with their favorite colors.  Plus, it’s something you can keep and use again, year after year.

3•   Forget Fresh Cut Flowers:  Resist the age-old urge to purchase fresh cut roses or the flower of your choice.  They don’t last as long as you think, then end up in the trash, adding to amount of waste generated at Valentine’s Day.  If your loved one has their heart set on flowers, go with a potted plant or flowers like tulips or a hydrangea that can be enjoyed on Valentine’s Day, then planted outside when Spring finally arrives.

4•   Bake The Best: Sure chocolates are a huge hit on Valentine’s Day, but you can easily ditch the pre-packaged treats and make your own.  The grocery store has plenty of specialty cookies, brownies, cakes and fudge you can bake.  Yes, you can do it, just follow the directly exactly.  It’s often cheaper than purchasing pre-packed products, there is less packaging waste, plus baking yourself adds to “the thought that counts.”

5•   Dine On A Dime:  Know your Valentine and plan accordingly for dinner.  If you can cook, fire up the oven or grill and make dinner for your sweetheart.  You can typically get more for your money by cooking at home, plus you save on gas money.  You can also go organic with your grocery purchase and be more environmentally savvy.
