In the winter, there’s no such thing as the wash-and-go when it comes to hair. It’s too cold outside – you can actually freeze your hair if you go out with it damp. That means the lovely days of summer and giving your hair a break from heat styling are long gone. You’re going to be leaning on the hair dryer and heat styling a lot more.

And that means you can damage your hair. You’re going to lose a lot of protein and moisture from your hair in the winter time, and if you don’t take steps, your hair will sustain damage.

If you’re not sure if your hair is damaged, here’s a quick test to tell if you have healthy hair: Pull one strand of hair from your head and drop it into a cup of water. If it sinks and drops to the bottom, it needs protein and moisture desperately. Healthy hair will float on the top, so if it sinks at all, you need to do a little extra to take care of it.

Well, it’s a good thing that it’s simple to keep hair damage to a minimum. Just a few easy quick fixes, and you’re good to go. Here’s what you do:

Do a Steam Treatment:

This helps open the cuticle and lets your conditioner really get deep into the hair shaft. After you shampoo, apply a deep conditioner like Redken Extreme Rescue to your wet hair. Dampen a towel and microwave it for two minutes. (You might want to wear rubber gloves to keep from burning your hands.) Let it cool for just a couple of seconds, then wring it out if it’s dripping. Then wrap it around your hair and leave it for five minutes. Rinse, and you’re done.

Also, before you blow dry or heat style, use a heat protectant and hair strengthener with protein. Just add a few drops and rub over your hair. The heat from the blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron will actually help the protein sink into the hair shaft, making it stronger, softer, and shinier. I’m truly fond of Chi Silk Infusion. The long hot summer is over, and with it goes summer makeup and beauty care. Fall, with its cooler weather has a whole different set of beauty problems. Here are some tips to keep you looking fresh this fall.

Hair Care

Make sure to deep condition your hair once a week. The dryer air and cooler temps of the fall can dry out your locks in a heartbeat. You don’t want your hair looking as dull as the dead leaves littering the ground. Deep conditioning treatments will keep your hair soft, shiny and healthy.

Try not to shampoo as frequently. Try every other day if you can.

Use a leave in conditioner. You might think your hair gets less damage in the autumn, but you’d be wrong. We all tend to shed more hair during the fall, so conditioner your hair and strengthen that new hair right from the beginning.

Skin care

As the winds pick up and the air grows cooler, you’re going to be more prone to dryness and chapping. Make sure you use a daily moisturizer with a sunscreen during the day. Use a night moisturizer as well, to keep down the chapping and dry skin. Also, use a moisturizing body wash, to keep the rest of your skin from drying out.

Make sure to exfoliate during the fall. You’ll avoid that flaky, dull skin you can get in cooler, windy weather. Just make sure you moisturize well afterward.

Nail care

Lip care

You’ve seen Taylor Swift’s hair – it’s absolutely gorgeous. Lots of luscious, gorgeous curls with body and bounce. I don’t know about you, but I love those curls. If you have shoulder length or longer hair, you can get that style easily with a conical curling iron and a few styling products.

Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo. Use a lightweight conditioner if you need one. You don’t want to weigh down your hair. Use a volumizing thermal protectant lotion before you blow dry.

Put the top layer of your hair up, out of your way. Begin curling the bottom layer of hair at mid length away from face. Start wrapping at the largest part of the curling iron, curling the ends with the small part of the conical iron. Remember, the bigger the sections of hair you curl, the looser the curls will be. Try curling one inch pieces; if that’s too much for you or you have a lot of hair, go slightly larger. Once you’re done with the bottom layer, take down the top and start curling it, remembering to start the curls at mid length.

Turn your head upside down and lightly fluff with your fingers. If your curls are still too tight, rake your fingers through to loosen them, or shake your head. Use a finishing spray or medium hold hair spray to hold your curls.

The next day, you can spray in a curl booster and your hair will still look great. Your curls will be separated and defined. Bouncy, beautiful curls rock!

If the sun doesn’t streak your hair naturally, you can fake those summer highlights. It’s easy to do, and looks totally natural. All you must do is keep a few simple tips in mind.

Work with your hair, not against it. You are going to want to use shades as highlights that are lighter than – but close to – your natural color. If you go no more than three shades lighter, it will look natural and authentic. No one will be able to tell that you did the streaking yourself. If you have light brown hair, try blond highlights. If you have dark hair, use a golden brown color to highlight your hair or even red highlights.

Use two colors for a very natural, sun streaked look. When your hair is naturally streaked by the sun, it’s never the same color all over. If you use two colors, it will look even more as if the sun did the work, not a colorist.

Highlight the ends more than the roots. It won’t require as many touch-ups over the summer, and it makes you look as if you’ve been to the beach a lot. What could be sexier?

Go for a natural look instead of ‘bleached blond’. You want people to think you’ve been on a summer vacation, not wonder where you get your hair dyed.

Make sure to use a shampoo for color treated hair to maintain your beautiful highlights all summer long. The less often you have to color your hair, the less chance you have of damaging your hair. Make sure to use a good conditioner, as well. You want shiny, healthy hair, not dried out hair with lots of split ends.

Shiny, healthy hair is the best style for your hair. It makes you look younger and is always something you should strive for. Shiny hair is sexy. No matter what kind of cut or style you wear, it’s enhanced by healthy, shiny hair.

Here are a few tips that can help improve your shine:

Avoid drying out your hair. Over-coloring or over-shampooing can do this. Color your hair no more than every 5 to 6 weeks – I’m not talking about touch-ups, though those can be damaging as well if done too quickly. Shampoo daily only if you must. If your hair isn’t oily, try going a day without shampooing and see if it still styles and looks good.

If you must heat style, make sure to use thermal protectant shampoo or thermal protectant hair products. This keeps your hair from being damaged, and ramps up your shine.

When you do wash your hair, make your last rinse (when you rinse out your conditioner) cool water. This seals the hair cuticle and will also make your hair smoother. The smoother the hair cuticle, the higher the amount of shine you’ll get. Try this, it really works!

If you blow dry, finish with a blast of cool air, which also seals the hair’s cuticle and raises shine.

Try a shine serum for extra sheen. A lot of shine serums double as anti-frizz serums, so you get a two-in-one. If you need shine serum for fine hair, make sure to use a spray that doesn’t weigh your hair down. You can also try a finishing spray. These do double duty; they hold your style and make your hair shiny and healthy-looking at the same time.
