If you want to green your life, one of the first things you need to do is learn to think outside the box. There are green solutions in almost all areas of your life. All it takes is a little creative thinking.

And if all that feels overwhelming – just read about the 13 year old boy who figured out a way to make solar panels 50% more efficient. He studied the patterns of trees and built a solar panel that mimics the way trees collect sunlight.

You don’t have to come up with groundbreaking ideas as he did, but a few little tricks can save energy and save you money.

Do you have a patio or a garden? Use recycled or found objects to make planters or containers. Some of them can be quite beautiful and unique. A worn out old tire makes a great flower bed. I’ve seen a Dutch oven used as a hanging flower basket, and I’ve even seen an old work boot used as a plant holder. I regularly use 2 liter soda bottles as plant starters. I just cut off the tops and use the bottoms to grow small tomato plants or peppers. When they get bigger, I transplant them into a larger pot and re-use the pop bottles. Tin cans make great plant holders – just make a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage, and you’re good to go. You can paint them, if you’d like a prettier look.

Save containers and use them to freeze or store leftovers – you now have a great use for that butter container that’s been hanging around in your cabinet. Or store things like buttons, nails, or art supplies in them. Use glass jars in the same way, or use them as drinking glasses. I have a friend who uses mason jars to serve iced tea in, and they’re super cute.

If you have the storage space, buy products in bulk and store them. So, you’re going off to college. Exciting, isn’t it? Most colleges give out a list of ‘must-haves’ for incoming freshmen, but here are some green and money saving tips for that list, as well.

Get a bicycle. You might need a car for longer trips, but for getting around campus there’s nothing more convenient and energy saving than a bike. July is National Anti-Boredom Month, and a few other – um – sort-of holidays. In addition, July is also National Blueberry Month, National Cell Phone Courtesy Month, National Hot Dog Month, National Ice Cream Month, and National Unlucky Month for Weddings.

National Anti Boredom Month has come along just in time. I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to stay inside more and more. It’s too hot to hang outside much, unless I’m lounging by a pool or having my own personal cabana boy bring me margaritas. Needless to say, that isn’t happening. I’m starting to get…well, bored.

Go Tubing. Never heard of it? What you do is float down a river on an inner tube. It’s more fun than it sounds, believe me. Just make sure to stock up on sunblock with a high SPF before you go. Using a leave in conditioner with sunscreen also isn’t a bad idea. You can find places to go tubing by running a search on Google. Just enter the name of your state and tubing, and plenty of sites will pop up, believe me.

Play a round of mini Golf. Remember how much fun that was as a kid? It still is. It’s cheap, too. A local mini Golf course near me charges $4 a game. It might not be that inexpensive where you are, but I’d bet it’s under ten.

Take underwater pictures. This is a lot of fun! We did this recently, and some of the pictures were amazing. I loved it. It was creative, and we got to cool off while we took the pictures. Don’t have a camera that will work underwater? Get a waterproof disposable camera. They’re waterproof up to 50 feet. Just make sure to get it developed at a place that recycles the used ones. I always ask first.

Go for a picnic in the park. Pack up some sandwiches and drinks in a reusable bag, throw a blanket in there, and off you go. My local park has great picnic tables, all shaded by trees. Afterward, we always go for a walk by the pond and feed the ducks the leftovers. It’s heavenly.

Hey, I’ve got to go! I’m going to work on some more anti-boredom ideas. Also, in celebration of National Anti Boredom Month, I’m going to eat hot dogs and blueberry ice cream while talking courteously and considerately on my cell phone. And I’m NOT going to get married. Doesn’t sound boring at all, does it?

Push it against the back of your head against your scalp, and tuck in the ends. Use jeweled hairpins or little barrettes to hold it in place. You’ll want to use a finishing spray to hold it in place. There’s been a recent resurgence in brunette and dark hair in Hollywood, and that means my brown locks are now in fashion. After years of being upstaged by blondes, I’m now IN. It’s about time, I say.

Perhaps because of this sudden brunette popularity, there are lots of companies that now make hair products specifically for brunettes. I was skeptical, at first.
