Quick, what is the largest organ in your body? You might be surprised to know that it is your skin. It not only has the important job of making sure to keep chemicals, bacteria, and viruses out, but we also appreciate a healthy looking skin. Besides using Regenerist Night Recovery Cream from Olay at night and the Healthy Skin with SPF 15 Lotion from Neutrogena during the day, what you eat plays a vital role in how beautiful your skin is going to look. What are some healthy foods that will benefit you?

Fruits and vegetables

There are a number of great fruits and vegetables that will improve your skin health; this is an absolute key food group. For example, a leafy green vegetable such as spinach is filled with vitamin A. Vitamin A is proven to help with skin repair and help you get rid of acne. If you want to increase your collagen production, the fibrous skin protein that helps keep your skin supple and minimize skin wrinkles, you should eat sweet potatoes because they are loaded with vitamin C, a key nutrient in collagen production.

Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are full of antioxidants. These antioxidants will protect your skin against free radical damage. These free radicals can form when you are exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. By having enough antioxidants, you can make sure that they will never damage your skin cells.

Dairy

Cottage cheese and low-fat yogurt are also great sources of vitamin A for skin health. Meanwhile, yogurt is full of acidophilus, a useful bacterium that will promote intestinal health and facilitates digestion. Having a healthy digestive tract is linked to having a healthy, beautiful skin.

Nuts

If you are looking for a nut that will support skin health, look no further than the Brazil nut. These nuts are an easy way to get your daily requirements of selenium. Selenium plays an important role in the synthesis of the intracellular antioxidant glutathione. Again, this revolves around the removal of free radicals that come from environmental factors such as cigarette smoke and air pollution.

Fish

Just 3 ounces of canned tuna every day is going to give you enough selenium to support a healthy skin. King mackerel is also a great alternative and contains omega-3 fatty acids to boot. These help decrease skin inflammation, keep your skin moisturized, and help in smoothing out wrinkles.

Having a good diet and a strict skincare regimen is going to ensure that you keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant for much longer.

Oily skin can be caused by genetics, diet, hormone levels and even the cosmetics you use. But in 90 plus degree weather, oily skin becomes an issue that most everyone will have to deal with. So lets talk about some prevention techniques you can use, so that you don’t have to look like a greasy, sweaty mess.

First I want to point out that there is a pattern to most health and skin related issues. What you out into your body, AND what you put on your body. So I am going to break it down starting from the inside – out.

What to put into your body to combat oily skin:

1. Always the #1 answer: Drink lots of water! Water keeps your body and your skin hydrated and flushes out toxins. Read our previous blog 12 Benefits of Drinking Water for more about the benefits of hydration.

2. Limit your intake of sugars, salts and fats. Avoid fried, highly seasoned foods or highly processed vegetable oils.

3. A deficiency in vitamin B2 can cause oily skin so either take a supplement or eat foods rich in vitamin B such as: whole grains, beans, nuts, nutritional yeast and what germ.

4. East plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid sugar, chocolate, and junk food, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.

What to put ON your body to combat oily skin:

1. Keep your face clean – use a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil Daily and rinse with luke warm water

2. Use oil free moisturizers and cosmetics such as Clean & Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer

3. Avoid products that contain alcohol, an alcohol free toner will help soak excess oil such as Neutrogena Alcohol Free Toner

4. For makeup: use a tinted moisturizer and mineral powder instead of foundation. The mineral powder will soak up oil like a sponge!

5. For makeup Removal: Almay non-oily makeup pad remover is great for eye makeup and Biore makeup removing towelettes are great for the face.

If you haven’t tried Biosilk Silk Therapy before – you are missing out! This lightweight, silky smooth formula is great for any hair type. Not only does it make your hair look silky, shiny and smooth, but it nourishes the hair, smooth’s the cuticle and helps repair split ends. This treatment can be used daily, weekly or any time in between, and will leave you will leave you with beautiful, healthy looking hair. What many don’t know is that Biosilk Silk Therapy also contains sunscreen, to help protect the hair from harmful rays, AND can double up as a skin moisturizer!

How do you apply?

1. Wash and condition your hair with a good shampoo and conditioner. The manufacturer recommends using Biosilk Silk Therapy Shampoo and Biosilk Silk Therapy Conditioner for best results.

2.	Apply a small amount to the top of your scalp and/or through and to the ends of your hair. For short or fine hair use a dime size amount and for longer hair use an amount the size of a quarter. The best option is to start small and apply more as needed so that you don’t apply more than your hair can handle and end up looking greasy.

3. Blow dry and style your hair as usual. Biosilk can be applied to both wet and dry hair so feel free to add a touch more to tame any remaining fly-aways and frizzy hair.

What’s the biggest organ of the body? It’s your skin, of course. It’s your first line of defense against infection, and it covers and protects everything in your body. It’s also the first thing every person you meet notices, consciously or unconsciously. You want a complexion that’s glowing and healthy, of course. When your skin looks good, your entire appearance is enhanced.

Look down at your hands for a minute. Even though you can’t see anything happening, your skin cells are hard at work and new skin cells are forming. When they’re complete, they move to the top. Older cells near the top die and rise to the surface. What you’re looking at right now on your hands are really dead skin cells. You shed millions of dead skin cells a day. Those dead skin cells protect you, but when they hang around too long, they can make your skin look dull and ashy.

So, how do you get rid of those dead skin cells and revitalize your complexion? One of the best ways to enhance the appearance of your skin is to exfoliate. It gets rid of the surface layer of dead skin cells and makes your skin look fresh and healthy. A good facial scrub and a good exfoliating body wash can give your skin the glow you want. You want to make sure that it’s gentle enough, and that it’s moisturizing. You also want to make sure you don’t damage your skin by scrubbing too hard. You want to gently exfoliate dull, dry skin to give you even skin tone and texture, not leave patches of sore, red skin. For your body, use a pouf or a loofah and gently scrub in circles. For your face, splash your skin with warm water. Gently apply in a massaging circular motion, avoiding the eye area.

You don’t want to exfoliate too often, especially on your face. If you have sensitive or dry skin, exfoliating your face once a week is sufficient. If you have oily skin, exfoliating your face twice a week should do the trick. For your body, three times a week is the perfect amount. If that makes you feel dry or irritated, try twice a week. If that still seems too much, cut it back further and just exfoliate once a week.

Do you exfoliate regularly? What products do you use? Tell me on twitter, Facebook, or just leave me a message here on the blog.
